Saturday's Artist Profile:
Amarilli Arenosto

Daily Muse: How would you describe your art?

Amarilli Arenosto: I paint supernatural, fairytale, or mythological creatures with oils, acrylics, or both. In my works, I try to transmit my love and respect for innocence and my attraction to the mysterious and to what is hidden and layered.

Tell us more. . .

Amarilli: I focus on subjects which make me happy and which I burn for (instead of things to criticize or denounce). I often like to depict characters which might look “scary” at a first approach and which, when seen in a deeper light (without prejudices), reveal a positive aspect of wisdom, compassion, or protection, and sometimes also of transformation of the negative into positive. I am fascinated by the figure of the Guardian, which is inherently good (protecting), but which has also a scary, terrible aspect: It has to scare away what threatens its protégé, so it must have claws and teeth to defend what is good, wise, innocent. I have met persons intimidated by my paintings; they probably identify with things that I consider unnatural or dangerous.

A 3.2 Million Year Old 'LUCY'
Debuts at the Houston Museum of Natural Science

June 30th, 2007 - HOUSTON, TEXAS -- Ethiopia is the cradle of mankind, the birthplace of coffee, the purported resting place of the Ark of the Covenant — and home to legions of Bob Marley fans.

The exhibition will include the original fossilized remains of the 3.2 million year old hominid known as Lucy. With 40 percent of her skeleton intact, Lucy remains the oldest and most complete adult human ancestor fully retrieved from African soil.

Other important paleoanthropological discoveries will also be represented to complete the current account of human evolution as known to scientists today.

Discover five million years of this country’s diverse history and culture in the world premiere exhibition Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia, on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science from Aug. 31, 2007 – April 20, 2008.
